Preparing for the Trip
Choosing a trail was the toughest thing -specially in a place like White Mountains where there are 100's of them. In the spirit of choosing a medium trail we ended up choosing a difficult one ( we learned that later). I will write another section to talk about 'how to choose a trail'.
All set with packing. My advice to new hikers - don't miss the nuts while hiking. They give instant energy. Camera's Charged
Finally we decided to hike Dickey Welch
Day 1:-
Finding the trail wasn't that hard. If you want to use GPS search for ORRIS Road. This is in exit 28 off I-93. Follow Orris Road for 0.6 mile and then take a short fork to the right to reach a large parking area.
The Welch-Dickey Loop trail starts from the upper end of this parking area and quickly forks with the left branch leading most directly to Dickey Mountain and the right leg first encountering Welch Mountain.
Me and my wife haven't been hiking for a while. We thought the 5 mile loop was easy enough but wasn't that that easy.
Pictures explain more than words so here they are:-
This is how it started. thick forest, fresh spring leaves and a smooth elevation

This trail had 2 summits. this is the Gorgeous Welch Summit. Reaching this was not that difficult.

Hiking the other half Dickey was the toughest. It had the too many variations of elevation, will definitely test the strengths of experienced hikers. But the pain was worth the while, Amazing view awaited us, Wish I had stayed longer.
